15 Internet Marketing Terms and Definitions

For those new to internet marketing one of the more difficult parts is learning what all the acronyms and even full terms mean.The reason for this hub will be to help you understand the definition of internet marketing terms you will come across as you begin learning.

SEO = Search Engine Optimization which is the process of placing keywords and building links with the attempt of ranking your presence higher in the search engines.

1st. Definition of SERPS = Search Engine Ranking Pages or Search Engine Result Pages these are the pages that search engines display after you input a certain keyword or term.The way you use SERP in a sentence would be “my website is ranking well within the SERPs”.

2nd. Definition of SERPS = Search Engine Ranking Position the actual position of your website within the search engines for any given keyword this is also known simply at SEP or search engine position.

Search Engine Index = This is the complete list of websites that any given search engine has.When a webmaster says “I wish I was indexed in Google”, this means they want Google to place their website into the list.

SEM = Search Engine Marketing This is a form of marketing which encompasses all forms of marketing which are used to help a websites performance in the search engines.The two main forms of search engine marketing are search engine optimization and ppc publishing.

PPC Publishing = Pay Per Click Publishing A form of paid marketing where you pay search engine to show up under “sponsors” or “ads” for given keyterms.Some of the more common PPC publishing companies include Google Adwords and Yahoo Search Marketing.(Be careful with this form of marketing, start slow and make sure you are making more than you are spending before you dump thousands into this form of marketing)

Search Engine Spider = This is the software that the major search engines use to find and index websites.These programs crawl the entire internet cataloging everything they find in the search engine index.These programs use links as doorways from one page to another which means if you would like to get found by search engines you will need links from indexed websites pointing towards your page.

Link = This is when webmasters use the anchor tag with the href attribute to create a doorway from one page to another or one website to another.A link can be a picture or text and is how search engines judge the popularity of a website.

Backlink = A backlink is what webmasterscall external links pointing towards their website.These are also called incoming links or in links.

Social Marketing = Social marketing is when you use social websites which are usually social networking and social bookmarking in order to build relationships with their audience or increase traffic.

SMO = Search Marketing Optimization is when you attempt to build traffic from social websites by ranking well in social bookmarking websites or being shared on social networks.The main method of social marketing optimization is making your website easy to share on the social networks by implementing social media buttons.

Niche = This is the topic of website or blog you are looking at or create.There are several terms which use the term niche as a base.Micro Niche Marketing is when you target extremely targeted keywords within any given niche.Niche Marketing is when you market your presence directly to your niche audience.

Monetization or Monetizing A Website = This is when you attempt to earn money from a website by adding monetization programs.The main forms of monetization include affiliate marketing, ppc publishing, selling adspace, and selling your own products.

Affiliate Marketing = An affiliate program or becoming an affiliate is when you agree to sale someone elses product and in return you receive a commission.The types of affiliate programs include instant pay programs and returning commission programs.

Conversion Rate = This is the number of visitors which actually click your monetization links divided by the total number of visitors.If three people make you money by clicking links or purchasing products and there was a hundred total visitors your conversion rate is 3%.
